How Many Weeks Are in a Year?

A year has 52 weeks and 1 day (or 2 days in a leap year). Find out how weeks work in date calculations.

Published by HowUntil Editorial Team

A standard year has 52 weeks and 1 day (365 ÷ 7 = 52 remainder 1). A leap year has 52 weeks and 2 days.

Why Isn't It Exactly 52 Weeks?

52 weeks × 7 days = 364 days — one day short of a standard 365-day year. This is why the same date each year falls on a different day of the week (shifting by 1–2 days).

ISO Week Numbers

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO 8601) defines weeks as starting on Monday. Under this system, weeks are numbered 1 through 52 (or 53 in some years). The first week of the year is the week containing the first Thursday.
